Football clubs usually search for players they need to strengthen their squad during the transfer window. They negotiate contracts, transfer fees, and other paperwork before bringing new players into the team.

Some transfers can be completed smoothly before the transfer window reaches its final day. However, other negotiations do not always go as planned. When clubs fail to reach an agreement with their main transfer targets, they sometimes have to quickly look for alternative players and complete deals on Deadline Day.

Signing a new player can sometimes turn out to be a huge success, but it can also become a major failure. Among the players signed on Deadline Day, there have been some who made a significant contribution to their new clubs. On the other hand, there have also been players who failed to reproduce the form they showed at their previous clubs and became some of the biggest transfer disappointments.

Today, we are going to take a look at five of the worst Deadline Day signings in football.

1. Andy Carroll

Liverpool signed Andy Carroll from Newcastle United for £35 million on Deadline Day after their key player, Fernando Torres, left the club to join Chelsea.

Carroll was brought in as a replacement for Torres on the final day of the transfer window. At that time, his transfer fee made him one of the most expensive English players in the world.

However, Carroll struggled with injury problems soon after arriving at Liverpool and missed several matches during the early stages of his career at the club. Even after recovering from his injuries, he was unable to produce performances that justified his huge transfer fee.

Carroll went through a difficult period at Liverpool and managed to score only 11 goals in 58 appearances in all competitions.

2. Fernando Torres

Fernando Torres was one of the players who reached incredible heights during his time at Liverpool, producing some of the best performances of his career.

In 2011, Chelsea were looking for a world-class striker and signed Torres from Liverpool for a record-breaking £50 million on Deadline Day, shortly before the transfer window closed.

Although Torres had been outstanding at Liverpool, his performances at Chelsea were often disappointing. He appeared to lose confidence and went through one of the most difficult periods of his career, struggling even to score goals consistently.

Despite the huge expectations surrounding his arrival, Torres was unable to reproduce the same level of form he had shown during his time at Liverpool.

3. Alexis Sánchez

In 2018, Manchester United signed Alexis Sánchez from Arsenal in a swap deal involving Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

At the time, Sánchez was considered one of the best players in the Premier League and was even given Manchester United's iconic number 7 shirt.

During his time at Arsenal, Sánchez was capable of leading the attack with his pace, strength, energy, and determination. However, after joining Manchester United, his performances declined dramatically, making many fans feel as though he had become a completely different player.

Sánchez played 45 matches in all competitions for Manchester United, scoring 5 goals and providing 9 assists.

The impressive form he showed at Arsenal was never seen consistently at Old Trafford. After struggling for form, Sánchez eventually left Manchester United and joined Inter Milan during the 2019–20 season.

4. Radamel Falcao

Manchester United signed Radamel Falcao on a season-long loan from Monaco for a loan fee of around £6 million, with an option to make the transfer permanent at the end of the season.

Falcao's move is often considered one of the biggest disappointments among Deadline Day signings.

Manchester United had huge expectations because of the incredible performances Falcao had produced earlier in his career, particularly during his time with Monaco and other European clubs. However, he struggled with injury problems and was unable to deliver the performances that the club had expected.

Falcao played 29 Premier League matches for Manchester United and scored only 4 goals.

5. Danny Drinkwater

Chelsea signed Danny Drinkwater from Leicester City for £35 million on Deadline Day as they looked to strengthen their midfield.

Chelsea hoped to reunite the successful midfield partnership of N'Golo Kanté and Danny Drinkwater, who had played an important role in Leicester City's historic Premier League title-winning campaign.

However, Drinkwater was unable to produce performances that matched Chelsea's expectations or the standard required at the club.

He spent much of his time under contract with Chelsea away from the first team and was sent out on loan to several different clubs.

Ultimately, the transfer became one of the most disappointing Deadline Day signings in Chelsea's history.
