The Full-Back Pair Real Madrid Let Go
Real Madrid are a club that have earned the reputation of being the kings of European football. They are one of the most successful clubs in Europe, and because their squads have consistently been filled with some of the best players in the world, they have often been described as a true galaxy of football stars.
The players who represent Real Madrid are generally among the very best in their respective positions. Building squads almost exclusively around elite players has brought Real Madrid enormous success, but it has also come with certain drawbacks.
Achraf Hakimi and Theo Hernández are currently regarded among the top full-backs in world football. Both have become indispensable players for their respective clubs. However, the two players who are now performing at a world-class level at right-back and left-back were once Real Madrid players themselves.
Back then, Real Madrid were enjoying one of the most successful periods in their history. It was essentially the prime era of the club’s star-studded squad. At that time, Marcelo and Dani Carvajal were the players dominating the left-back and right-back positions.
Marcelo and Carvajal offered an excellent balance between attacking and defending. Their quality crossing, technical ability, and ability to contribute with spectacular long-range efforts made them hugely valuable to the team.
Because Marcelo and Carvajal were performing at such an exceptional level during their prime, Real Madrid had very little reason to give significant opportunities to the young Hakimi and Hernández.
As a result, both young full-backs spent considerable periods either out on loan or sitting on the bench. Eventually, they left Real Madrid and went on to establish themselves elsewhere.
However, it would be unfair to simply describe Real Madrid's decision as a mistake. When Marcelo and Carvajal were performing at the highest level of their careers, it was difficult for any manager to leave such established stars out of the starting lineup simply to give more opportunities to younger players.
And that is how Real Madrid eventually let go of two players who would go on to become among the best full-backs in the world: Achraf Hakimi and Theo Hernández.
For Real Madrid, losing an entire full-back pairing that would later develop into two world-class players is certainly something that can be looked back on with regret. At the same time, their departure was understandable given the incredible form of Marcelo and Carvajal during their prime years.
That is the story of the full-back pair Real Madrid once let go.
