How Did Chelsea Come Into Existence?
Chelsea are one of the most successful clubs in London and have established themselves as one of the biggest names in English and European football. But how did this iconic club actually come into existence?
Chelsea Football Club was officially founded on 10 March 1905 in an upstairs room at the Rising Sun pub, opposite Stamford Bridge. The club's origins were closely connected to Stamford Bridge and businessman Gus Mears, who had acquired the ground with the ambition of turning it into a major football venue.
Mears initially hoped that an existing football club, particularly Fulham, would move to Stamford Bridge. When that did not happen, the decision was made to establish a new club of their own — and Chelsea Football Club was born.
Chelsea's early squads were made up largely of British and Irish players, with a strong Scottish influence. The club quickly attracted large crowds and became an established Football League side.
Chelsea's first major trophy came in 1955, when they won the First Division title. Ten years later, in 1965, the club won its first League Cup. Chelsea then won their first FA Cup in 1970, before claiming their first European trophy — the European Cup Winners' Cup — in 1971.
The club later went through difficult financial periods. In the 1980s, Chelsea faced serious financial problems, but the arrival of players such as Ruud Gullit, Gianfranco Zola and Gianluca Vialli helped transform the club during the 1990s.
Chelsea won the FA Cup in 1997 and 2000, while the club also began establishing itself as a major force in European football. In 1998 alone, Chelsea won the League Cup, the Cup Winners' Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.
Chelsea also became famous for embracing international talent. On Boxing Day in 1999, Gianluca Vialli selected a starting XI made up entirely of foreign players against Southampton. It was the first time in the history of the Premier League and its predecessors that a starting lineup contained no British-born player.
A major turning point came in 2003, when Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich bought Chelsea. His arrival completely changed the club's financial power and ambition. He appointed José Mourinho as manager and invested heavily in the squad.
The most successful era in Chelsea's history began to take shape under Abramovich's ownership. Under Mourinho, Chelsea won back-to-back Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006. They also won the League Cup in 2005 and 2007, as well as the FA Cup in 2007.
Chelsea then reached another historic milestone in 2012. In the Champions League final in Munich, the Blues defeated Bayern Munich on penalties to win the club's first-ever European Cup. Just one year later, Chelsea won the Europa League.
In 2021, Chelsea won their second Champions League title by defeating Manchester City in the final. The following year, they completed their collection of major international honours by winning the FIFA Club World Cup.
Roman Abramovich's era eventually came to an end in 2022 following sanctions imposed on him by the UK government after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Chelsea were subsequently sold to a consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.
Since their foundation, Chelsea have developed into one of England's most decorated clubs. Their major honours include six English top-flight league titles, eight FA Cups, five League Cups, two Champions League titles, two Europa League titles, two Cup Winners' Cups, two UEFA Super Cups and one FIFA Club World Cup. Chelsea have also since added the UEFA Conference League, becoming the first club to win all five major UEFA men's competitions.
From a club founded in 1905 to one of the biggest forces in English and European football, Chelsea's journey has been filled with legendary players, unforgettable managers, major trophies and dramatic turning points.
That is the story of how one of London's most successful football clubs — Chelsea — came into existence and developed into the global football powerhouse we know today.
