The History of AC Milan
The History of AC Milan
AC Milan is one of the most influential and successful football clubs in the world. The Italian giants have achieved tremendous success not only domestically in Italy but also on the European stage.
Although AC Milan have been relatively distant from major trophies in recent years, the club has enjoyed several golden eras throughout its long and prestigious history.
In European football, AC Milan are one of the most successful clubs in UEFA Champions League history. They have won the European Cup/UEFA Champions League seven times, second only to Real Madrid.
AC Milan were founded on December 16, 1899, by Englishmen Herbert Kilpin and Alfred Edwards. At the time of their foundation, the club was originally called Milan Football and Cricket Club.
Herbert Kilpin, one of the club's founders, famously described the meaning behind the club's colors, red and black. Red represented the desire to fight fiercely against their opponents, while black represented the fear that they wanted to inspire in their rivals.
From that moment onward, red and black became an essential part of AC Milan's identity.
In 1900, AC Milan finished as runners-up in their first Italian championship, losing the title to Genoa by a narrow margin.
However, just one year later, in 1901, AC Milan won their first major trophy by becoming Italian champions.
Their success continued, and AC Milan won the Italian championship again in 1906 and 1907, establishing themselves as one of the emerging forces in Italian football.
However, internal disagreements later emerged within the club, particularly over whether the team should continue signing foreign players.
One group wanted AC Milan to continue primarily with Italian players, while another group wanted to build a stronger team by bringing in more foreign players.
The latter group eventually broke away and founded Inter Milan.
This division laid the foundation for one of football's most famous rivalries. From that point onward, AC Milan and Inter Milan developed an intense rivalry that continues to this day.
After this period, AC Milan went through a less successful era, while clubs such as Juventus and Genoa became dominant forces in Italian football.
Following the end of the Second World War, AC Milan rebuilt their squad by bringing in foreign players. In 1951, the club finally returned to the top by winning the Serie A title.
They continued their success by winning the league again in 1955, 1957 and 1959. The early 1960s became another golden period in AC Milan's history.
In 1963, AC Milan won the European Cup for the first time in their history. They also became the first Italian club to win the prestigious European trophy.
In 1969, AC Milan won the European Cup for a second time.
A major turning point came in 1986, when billionaire businessman Silvio Berlusconi purchased the club. Berlusconi promised to transform AC Milan into one of Europe's greatest clubs.
He invested heavily in the team, bringing in the players the club needed and improving its facilities and overall structure.
After undergoing major changes, AC Milan won the European Cup in 1989 and 1990.
In 1991, AC Milan became Serie A champions without losing a single league match.
Their dominance continued into the 1990s. In 1994, AC Milan once again won the European Cup, while they also dominated Serie A by winning the league title four consecutive times from 1992 to 1996.
This was one of the most successful periods in the club's history.
In 2003, under manager Carlo Ancelotti, AC Milan won the UEFA Champions League once again.
Then, in 2007, they captured their seventh European Cup/UEFA Champions League title, further cementing their place among Europe's greatest clubs.
However, after that period, AC Milan gradually entered a period of decline. Several key players from their golden generation began to age, while the club also faced financial difficulties.
In 2014, AC Milan went through changes in ownership. Between 2014 and 2018, the club experienced a period of instability involving Chinese and Thai ownership.
In 2022, AC Milan were acquired by the American investment firm RedBird Capital Partners.
Since then, the club has been working to restructure and rebuild in an effort to return to the highest level of European football.
And that is the history of AC Milan, one of the most historic and successful clubs in world football.
Thank you very much to everyone who took the time to read until the end.
