The Most Impartial Human VAR in Football History
In modern football, it has become increasingly common to hear frustrated fans complaining the day after a match about refereeing mistakes and questioning how VAR could have made certain decisions. The quality of a football match is heavily influenced by the referee’s ability to make accurate decisions, remain impartial, use his authority correctly, and maintain control and influence over the game.
The accuracy of a referee’s decisions is extremely important in any football match. Correct decisions can turn an ordinary game into an entertaining contest full of footballing quality, while a single major refereeing mistake can completely change the atmosphere of an exciting match and prevent fans from fully enjoying the game.
However, there was once a “Human VAR” who was considered even more accurate and reliable than many of the VAR decisions we see today. That referee was Pierluigi Collina.
While modern VAR has often been at the center of controversy, Collina built a reputation for making decisive and highly respected decisions throughout his career.
Pierluigi Collina was born on February 13, 1960, in Bologna, the largest city in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy. During his teenage years, Collina played as a central defender for a local football team.
He later studied at the University of Bologna and graduated in 1988. After that, Collina began officiating matches in Italy’s Serie C1 and Serie C2. Thanks to his professionalism, impartiality, and accurate decision-making, he quickly progressed through the ranks and was soon given the opportunity to referee matches in Serie B and Serie A.
After officiating 43 Serie A matches, Collina became a FIFA-listed international referee in 1995.
His performances on the pitch, combined with his fairness and consistency, earned him enormous respect not only from football fans but also from players.
Collina became famous for his firm decision-making, honesty, and his ability to communicate directly with players face-to-face. These qualities helped him officiate some of the most memorable finals in football history.
He also became one of the most decorated referees in the world, winning FIFA’s World’s Best Referee award six times, a record at the time.
Among the major matches he officiated were the 1996 Olympic football final between Argentina and Nigeria, as well as the 1999 UEFA Champions League final between Manchester United and Bayern Munich.
And that brings us to the story of Pierluigi Collina, one of the most respected referees in world football. A referee who won FIFA’s World’s Best Referee award six times and earned the respect of both fans and players through his honesty, integrity, and decisive decisions on the pitch.
